Ceramic or Standard Window Tint: What’s the Difference?

Not all window tints are equal. There are two main families: standard tint and ceramic tint. They can look the same, but they perform very differently. Here’s how to choose.

Standard tint

Standard tint (dyed or colored film) darkens the windows and cuts glare a little. It’s the most affordable option. It offers decent protection, but blocks less infrared heat and can fade over time on entry-level films.

Ceramic tint

Ceramic tint uses ceramic nanoparticles to block heat without being darker. Its advantages:

  • Superior heat rejection — the cabin stays cooler in summer.
  • UV protection up to 99% — protects skin and the vehicle’s interior.
  • No interference with GPS, radio or cell signals (unlike metallic films).
  • Durability — it doesn’t fade or turn purple like some low-end films.

Ceramic vs standard: the comparison

Criteria Standard tint Ceramic tint
Heat rejection Moderate High
UV protection Good Up to 99%
Signal interference Possible (metallic films) None
Durability / color Can fade Stable over time
Price More affordable Higher

Which should you choose?

If budget is the priority and you mainly want the look, standard tint does the job. If you want comfort in hot weather, better UV protection and color that lasts, ceramic is the better choice.

What about compliance in Quebec?

Whatever the type, it’s the light percentage that determines compliance, not the film technology. To learn the allowed limits, read our article on the Quebec window tint law.
